Coeliac Awareness Week – Gluten Test Kits

Coeliac disease is a serious illness that causes the body’s immune system to attack its own tissues when gluten is consumed. This can damage lining of the gut and removes the body’s ability able to absorb nutrients from food properly.
Gluten is a protein that can be found in wheat, barley and rye. As the impact of gluten on a person with coelic disease can be severe, it is essential that food businesses take the necessary step to make consumers aware of the presence of gluten. As well as taking extra measures to ensure that products sold as ‘gluten-free’ meet the requirements to be sold as ‘gluten-free’. According to many national authorities and Codex Alimentarius standard 118-1797, the level of gluten in food must not exceed 20 mg/kg (20 ppm) for a product in order to be labelled as gluten-free.
